Dead gums, trees that have started to lean, cracked forks and big hanging limbs are what fail first in wind, often onto roofs, fences and cars. We'll tell you straight whether it needs to come down.
Some trees can be made safe by removing the dead or damaged limbs; some need to come down. A standing dead native tree 40 cm or more across at 1.3 m isn't covered by the dead-tree exemption, so we check the permit rules first.
On bush blocks around Maiden Gully, Strathfieldsaye, Junortoun and Axedale, we clear back around the house and along the fence line before summer, and chip what comes down.
In a bushfire prone area, the 10/30 rule lets you clear trees within 10 metres of a house built or approved before 10 September 2009, and other vegetation (not trees) within 30 metres.

We couldn't find a Bendigo tree business that publishes stump grinding or pruning prices, so these come from a Victorian tree service's cost guide (updated 20 July 2026) and national marketplace job data (24 March 2026), checked 27 September 2026. Neither says whether GST is included.

Planning overlays can protect trees on a block, and the state native vegetation rules cover many gums, wattles and other native species. Street trees belong to the council. The City of Greater Bendigo says a planning permit is usually required to remove, destroy or lop native vegetation, including dead vegetation, and overlays on some properties protect other trees too. There are exemptions, such as for some small blocks and for clearing close to a house in a bushfire prone area. Look up your address in VicPlan, then check with council before any work starts. No. The City of Greater Bendigo's nature strip guidelines say its planted nature strip trees are not to be pruned or lopped by property owners; the City maintains them. Request pruning or removal from council online or on 1300 002 642.

Lopping usually means cutting branches back to stubs, which leaves a tree sprouting weakly attached regrowth. Pruning cuts back to a proper branch point, following the Australian Standard for pruning amenity trees, AS 4373. That's how we prune. See lopping and pruning.
Your written quote spells out the whole job: taking the tree down, the stump if you want it ground, whether the chips and logs stay or go, and the clean-up. We agree the price before any work starts.
We chip branches on site, and the chips and logs are either left for you or taken away, which costs more. If you'd rather take garden waste yourself, the City of Greater Bendigo accepts domestic green waste free at Eaglehawk Landfill, up to a 6 x 4 caged trailer, but not stumps or branches over 200 mm thick. Burning garden waste is banned year round.

Powercor, the distributor for Bendigo, manages trees around its own powerlines at no cost to you, and says only workers it authorises can trim trees within the No Go Zone. The line from the pole to your house is different: Energy Safe Victoria says you're responsible for keeping your own trees at least one metre clear of it. Mention any lines when you contact us and we'll tell you who needs to do what.
